The Canadian Journal of Anesthesia (the Journal) (www.springer.com/12630) has a long and well established history of medical publication, dating back to 1954. The Journal publishes original work and reviews in the fields of anesthesia and critical care medicine, pain medicine, and perioperative medicine. Led by a senior editorial team and an international editorial board of experts in the field, the Journal prides itself on the quality of the editorial peer review process and the quality, novelty, and importance of published articles, which will be of interest to clinical anesthesiologists, intensive care and pain specialists, and researchers alike. The Journal is published monthly (12 issues per year) and is available in both print and online formats.
Scope and Mission: The Journal’s mission statement: “Excellence in research and knowledge translation in anesthesia, pain, perioperative medicine, and critical care” reflects the broad, but clearly defined scope of content and purpose. The Journal publishes reports of original investigations, meta-analyses and cohort studies, and a limited number of clinically-related basic science studies originating in Canada and internationally. With regards to knowledge translation, the editorial and scientific content focuses on a bench-to-bedside approach, and special articles address innovation in medical education and topics of broader perioperative medical interest to our readership.
New content features for clinicians
“Continuing Professional Development Modules”: Clinicians increasingly turn to their journals as an invaluable and effective means to advance their continuing medical education. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Modules are an important and regular feature of the Journal and contributions to this section of the Journal are welcome. The purpose of these accredited self-learning modules is to educate readers on current matters of clinical importance for practicing anesthesiologists. The CPD modules are diverse in content, and may include topics related to anesthesia, acute and chronic pain, perioperative medicine and critical care medicine. The modules differ from review articles, in that topics are selected to fulfill educational objectives of the practicing anaesthesiologist based upon a needs assessment, content provision, and self-evaluation, done in collaboration with the Department of Anesthesiology, Université de Montréal. Each module is accompanied by a case scenario, with a series of questions available though the online Journal, based on the contents of the review and the reading of approximately 2-3 additional highlighted articles. These modules meet the requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program. Successful completion of each module entitles the reader to claim 4 hours of CPD under Section 3 of CPD options, for a total of eight maintenance of certification (MOC) credits per completed module.
“Perioperative Cardiovascular Rounds” is a new feature of the Journal which provides an integrated and an “image-rich” approach to the diagnosis and evaluation of cardiovascular problems, including hemodynamic instability which may be encountered by practicing clinicians in the perioperative and critical care settings. Novel figures which integrate various hemodynamic and diagnostic imaging modalities, and real-time videos of related ECG, echocardiographic and hemodynamic tracings are important elements of the Rounds. Each submission will be considered with the potential to be published as a Dynamic Article, an enhanced format whereby the printed article contains embedded video material incorporating up to three videos playing up to one-minute each.
Benefits for Readers and Authors resulting from a new publishing partnership with Springer Science and Business Media, LLM (January, 2009)
Online publication ahead of print In terms of medical research, there is no question that high quality content should be made available to researchers and readers as quickly as possible. In this regard, one of the most observable changes to the Journal is online publication ahead of print, for each and every published article. With Online First™, the Journal’s new vehicle to issue accepted articles “online first” there is an accelerated publishing track on SpringerLink (where the online journal is hosted. Articles are electronically published ahead of print, within three weeks of an author’s review of article proofs and insertion of final corrections. Readers have access to online articles published in both Portable Document Format (PDF) and HyperText Markup Language (HTML) formats. The electronic versions of related metadata, that include different forms of supplementary material related to each article, are automatically be sent to all relevant bibliographic organizations on the day of the online publication. Recent changes to the online Journal The online Journal, including all backfiles for each published article dating back to 1954, Volume 1, now appear on Springer’s online platform, SpringerLink. Readers will notice a new homepage, while continuing to enjoy the benefits of our open-archive policy where all articles appearing online are freely available one year following the date of publication. The current version of SpringerLink, launched in 2006, incorporates eBooks, which are integrated with articles from Springer’s peer-reviewed journals. The site was further enhanced with improved search capabilities and personalization options.
A redesign of SpringerLink was launched at the end of 2008 with enhanced online functionalities and innovative new features, such as semantic analysis of documents and “look inside” preview capability to allow readers to view and browse the content of any document without having to download it first. We understand that the online experience involves more than just placing the print journal online. With more options for searches and customization, user-friendly guided navigation tools, and integration of books, journals, and reference works on a single user interface, we hope that the online journal will further transcend the print journal and enhance research, education, and knowledge transfer by means of the latest technology and the benefits provided by the internet.
Manuscript Preparation The Canadian Journal of Anesthesia is a strong advocate of clear scientific writing and transparent reporting. To facilitate accurate and clear reporting, manuscripts reporting original research should be prepared and submitted in accordance with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (www.icmje.org). For reports of clinical trials, systematic reviews, and observational studies, the Journal expects authors to follow the reporting guideline which is most relevant to their article, and to complete and submit the related checklists. The three most commonly-used guidelines relevant to the Journal include the following:
The latest versions of these statements and other useful resources are available on the EQUATOR Network website: www.equator-network.org. Peer reviewers are also requested to access the relevant reporting guideline and will consider the guidelines/checklists during their manuscript assessment.
Manuscript Submission Manuscripts are submitted to Canadian Journal of Anesthesia/Journal Canadien d'Anesthésie online via Editorial Manager (www.edmgr.com/cja). This web-based system will allow for quick and efficient processing of your manuscript. Please log directly onto the Editorial Manager site and upload your manuscript files following the instructions provided on the screen.
