Continuing Education and Professional Development (CEPD) Committee's Vision, Mission and Values Statements

The role of the Continuing Education and Professional Development Committee (CEPD) of the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society (CAS) is to consider and advise the CAS Board on specialty and non-specialty education in all aspects of anesthesia; and on Maintenance of Certification and continuing education to members in anesthesia and related fields. It will also function as an educational resource and support for all relevant Committees, Divisions, Sections, and the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia.

  • Its Vision is to endorse and promote an environment for all physicians to provide best practice and safe anesthesia care based on reflective, self-directed, and group learning processes.

  • Its Mission is to improve patient safety and care through advancement and support of professional educational opportunities for CAS members.

  • Its Values are based on the assumption that access to, and provision of skills and knowledge to meet both perceived and non-perceived needs of practitioners, is the best method of achieving the vision.

Defining CPD

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) extends beyond traditional continuing medical education, which is perceived to focus on updating medical knowledge. In CPD, practitioners define competencies that they see as relevant to their individual practice needs. CPD covers subject matter such as doctor-patient communication, interdisciplinary team skills and risk management, as well as other competencies defined by the Royal College’s CanMEDS 2015 Framework. CPD activities utilize a wide variety of education and content delivery formats.

Accreditation services

CAS has Accreditor Provider status in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) Maintenance of Certification Program and is able to approve programs meeting Sections 1 and 3 criteria.
