The Canadian Anesthesia Research Foundation (CARF) was founded in 1979 to administer funds and provide support to Canadian researchers in anesthesia who are members of the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society. These funds are essential in ensuring the stability of anesthesia research in Canada.

Research is the key to sustaining progress in the discipline of anesthesia. Ongoing and focused laboratory and clinically based research will ensure continuous improvements in perioperative medicine, intensive care and pain management. We are supporting research that builds on a long tradition of Canadian research in anesthesia which include the discovery, introduction and appropriate utilization of medications into clinical practice such a cyclopropane, neuromuscular blocking and reversal agents and sedatives.  Canadian anesthesia research continues to bring important advances to patient care.

These Include:

  • optimizing ventilation strategies in the ICU and the OR
  • understanding the role of factor concentrates in the bleeding patient and advancing patient blood management strategies and adherence
  • understanding the importance of preoperative risk assessment and frailty
  • leading the establishment of pre-habilitation
  • establishing an important role for perioperative ultrasound
  • developing strategies to reduce perioperative risk with regional anesthesia and fluid management
  • development of chronic and transitional pain management clinics and strategies to help with the reduction of pain disability following major surgery
  • optimizing the care of the parturient with evidence informed approaches to labour analgesia and cesarean anesthesia
  • the landmark development of knowledge about malignant hyperthermia
  • equity, diversity and inclusion in academic anesthesia

In 1985 the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society Research Grants Program was established to help ensure that Canadian researchers in anesthesia receive the funds they need. Today, the Program administers more than $200,000 annually to support innovative research and research training. As the largest provider of funds for Canadian anesthesia research, CARF is committed to supporting the Research Program, Operating Grants and Career Scientist Award and administering funds to recipients of the following investigator, sub-specialty and fellowship awards.
