A message from Dr Philip Jones, Chair, Research Advisory Committee

On behalf of the CAS Research Advisory Committee (RAC) and the Canadian Anesthesia Research Foundation (CARF), I’m pleased to announce the opening of the 2024 Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society (CAS) Research Grants Program.

The website to submit grant applications opens on October 19, 2023. The deadline for applications is January 7, 2024, at midnight.

We will offer operating grants in three categories: Residents, New Investigators, and Open awards.

The Resident award is for $10K.

The CAS Research Award is a New Investigator award for up to $30K. The Dr James Beckstead Award (a New Investigator award for up to $20K) will again be offered for grant applications researching Innovation in Anesthesia and/or Enhanced Recovery.

Note carefully - applicants for this award must include a section in their grant application under the heading “Why this project is innovative and/or will lead to enhanced recovery”. (See our Guidelines document for the details.)
The Dr R A Gordon Research Award is an open grant up to $30,000.

Some section-specific awards (awards Open to any member of the Section) will once again be granted this year. The proposed research must be related to the Section's goals and objectives, and applicants must be a member of the section for at least the duration of the award. (See our Guidelines document for the details.)
We will also offer the CAS Career Scientist Award in 2024. This 2-year salary award, normally offered on an alternating year cycle, requires matching funds from a sponsoring University Department of Anesthesiology. Including the matching funds, the total amount of the award over the two years is $120K.

I’d like to encourage applicants for this year’s awards to carefully review the Canadian Anesthesia Research Priority Setting Partnership’s (CAR-PSP) top 10 research priorities and 14 research questions. Developed by patients, clinicians, and researchers, the CAR-PSP priorities and questions identify uncertainties about the effects of anesthesia and perioperative care in Canada. While these are not the only research questions facing Canadian anesthesiologists, both patients and providers ranked them highest. The RAC will consider applications with this in mind. Go to https://www.car-psp.ca/ for more details.

If you have any questions regarding the CAS Research Grants Program, the RAC, or Canadian anesthesia research in general, please feel free to contact me at jones.philip2@mayo.edu.

In closing, on behalf of the CAS-RAC, I’d like to thank those individuals and groups whose generous donations to CARF have made the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society 2024 Research Awards Program possible.
