Overview:
In celebration of Earth Day, the Environmental Sustainability section will host a webinar to raise awareness of ocean sustainability and what it means for healthcare. The webinar will examine how changes in climate affect the care we provide as anesthesiologists. Furthermore, they will discuss sedation techniques over general anesthesia.
Learning Objectives:
After participating in this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Recognize the importance of ocean health as the basis to achieve net zero
2. Relate climate change and our way of practicing anesthesia
3. Formulate own anesthetic plan to incorporate environmentally sustainable options
Keynote Speaker:
Dr Richard Hixson (Keynote speaker), County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust and co-founder Healthcare Ocean.
Dr Richard Hixson FRCA FFICM is a Consultant in Critical Care Medicine, Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Exeter; NHS England Clinical Entrepreneur; Waste and Pollution Lead for the Intensive Care Society Sustainability Working Group; member of NHS England’s Sustainable Procurement Forum, the UK Ocean Decade Committee and the Minderoo–Monaco Commission on Plastics and Human Health. Richard co-founded Healthcare Ocean as his main interest is Global Goal 14, Life Below Water and how anthropogenic activities including healthcare procurement, container shipping and molecular pollution adversely affected the marine environment.

Rakesh Sondekoppam, MD, is the division director of regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City. He heads the acute pain and regional anesthesia services at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and continues to be involved in resident and fellowship training at the UIHC. He is also the founding member and current vice chair of the ASRA Pain Medicine Green Anesthesia Special Interest Group.

Deirdre Kelleher, MD, is a regional and acute pain anesthesiologist and chair of the Anesthesiology Sustainability Committee at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, NY. She is passionate about finding sustainable alternatives to current anesthetic and healthcare practices and reducing the environmental footprint of care while simultaneously improving its safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. She shares these best practices as the newsletter liaison for the ASRA Pain Medicine Green Anesthesia Special Interest Group.
Dr Timur Ozelsel, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada
Timur Özelsel, MD, DESA, is a clinical professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He is happily married and the father of three, all of whom are his stimulus for his engagement around sustainability, which is his primary passion and research interest professionally.
