Publications

Providing access to the latest advances in anesthesia, the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia (CJA) publishes peer-reviewed, high-profile basic and clinical research, as well as expert reviews and opinions. The CJA is published monthly both online and in print through Springer with a 3.337 Impact Factor.

The Guidelines to the Practice of Anesthesia provides basic guidelines to anesthetic practice for patients undergoing surgical and obstetric procedures in Canada. The Guidelines are reviewed annually and revised periodically. They are published in the January issue of the Journal and are also available on the CAS website.

The CAS quarterly newsletter, Anesthesia News, keeps members up-to-date with new developments.

Anesthesia Research

The CAS is also active in the promotion and undertaking of research. The CAS Research Advisory Committee reviews and approves a series of annual operating grants as well as the CAS Career Scientist Award in Anesthesia offered every other year.

Professional Development and Networking

The CAS Annual Meeting offers strong scientific Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited content. CAS members enjoy a significant discount for full meeting registration. Special discounts are available to CAS members who attend other designated societies’ annual meetings. Our online CPD modules, a popular source of Maintenance of Certification credits, further increases the value of a CAS membership and can be accessed at no charge by our members.

Our commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requires CAS to maintain its accreditor status with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. We also offer discounts to members applying for accreditation of meetings.

Insurance

The Personal provides CAS members with preferred rates on home and auto insurance. This voluntary benefit could mean significant savings for a CAS member.

Anesthesia Advocacy

Our primary goal is advocacy – remaining a driving force to nationally advance the interests of anesthesiologists and ensure they are recognized as professionals in acute and chronic pain management. Advocating for patient safety is also a high priority – an example is our Stop Smoking for Safer Surgery” campaign as well as our recent communication to the Federal Minister of Health regarding the problem of drug shortages. We also represent the interests of our members at the Canadian Medical Association, the Royal College, the Canadian Standards Association, Wait Time Alliance and the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists.

Archives and Artifacts

Over the years, CAS has been fortunate to preserve a collection of many pieces of anesthesia equipment. CAS membership dues maintain the important CAS Archives and Artifacts for future generations.

Foundations

The Canadian Anesthesia Research Foundation (CARF) and the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society International Education Foundation (CASIEF) continue their important work in research and international anesthesia development on behalf of Canadian anesthesiologists. CAS Members are encouraged to include donations to these foundations with their membership payment. Our successes in research and education distinguish us as an organization and as committed professionals.

Resources

The CAS website provides member-only access to CPD resources and the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia. Members can also access publications like the Guidelines to the Practice of AnesthesiaAnesthesia News, and numerous physician resources.
