The Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society Annual Meeting Working Group, Continuing Education and Professional Development Committee and Educational Consultant have developed several training resources for faculty, described below.
The Peer Observation Program
This innovative program was an important component of the CAS being awarded a 2016 Royal College Accredited CPD Provider Innovation Award. It was introduced at the 2015 Annual Meeting and was developed in response to the pressure that speakers feel to do a good job, without receiving training for this role.
The Program allows you to observe your colleagues – or be observed – and is designed to provide immediate non-evaluative feedback to speakers on their presentation skills and techniques. Even with prior training, this program will benefit you by honing your skills – remember, you don’t have to be bad to want to be better!
The Program is coordinated by our Annual Meeting Working Group, and your participation is eligible for Section 2 CME credits. If you wish to join the program, you can let us know when you submit your annual meeting speaker information. One of the organizers will contact you with instructions and will provide you with useful information (training material, checklist).
The Moderator Training Program
Our Moderator Training Program was developed as a resource to support and train the moderators who assist the CAS Annual Meeting. We offer two online training modules that are Section 3 SAP accredited, for both Single and Multiple Speaker sessions, to meet your specific needs. Up to 2 hours of CPD credit hours can be claimed for each module.

The PBLD Facilitator Training Program
Problem Based Learning Discussions (PBLD) have been a recent successful addition to our Annual Meeting. A PBLD is a learning-centered case or problem-based learning method that allows participants to be actively engaged in working through specific questions and challenges related to a clinical problem chosen for its relevance to practice and likelihood that it will provide significant learning.
CAS has developed an online training module that is Section 3 SAP accredited and offers tips that will help everyone from the first-time facilitator to the experienced presenter, including descriptions of the phases and structure of PBLDs, managing the participants’ experiences, and how to prepare IT for your session. Up to 2 hours of CPD credit can be claimed when this program is fully completed.

Acquiring Section 3 credits is becoming more important for participants in CPD programs.
