Certificate of Attendance (fillable PDF)
This webinar is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and approved by the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society. You may claim a maximum of 1.5 hours (credits are automatically calculated).
Only the live event is accredited. Watching the recording is not eligible for Section 1 credits. You might be able to claim Section 2 credits if you include it in a personal learning project.

Next in our CAS Town Hall series of COVID-19 webinars is the important discussion of respiratory support for the COVID-19 patient, both on and off the ventilator, including oxygen therapy options, non-invasive positive pressure support and ventilator management.
While there is little information, medical management options and best available evidence for anti-virals, hydroxychloroquine and plasma exchange, plasma pheresis will also be reviewed.

From the anesthesiologists’ perspective, how should a negative, indeterminate or positive result be interpreted? Dr Hoang will discuss the existing challenges of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assay in relation to COVID-19 detection, the lack of clinical assay performance data to guide interpretations for a negative result, and the various potential contributors to its clinical performance including how the sample is collected, where the PT is in the course of illness, upper versus lower respiratory illness, and more. Serological assay evaluation and how this assay should be used will also be discussed.

SPEAKERS:

Niall Ferguson, MD, FRPCPC, MSc
John Granton, MD, FRCPC
Linda Hoang MD, MSc, DTM&H, FRCPC

SPEAKERS:

Dr. Niall Ferguson
is Head of Critical Care Medicine at the University Health Network and Sinai Health System, and full Professor in the Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Toronto, with appointments in the Departments of Medicine and Physiology, and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto.  He is a Senior Scientist in the Toronto General Research Institute, and the Critical Care Lead for the Toronto-Central Local Health Integration Network. Dr. Ferguson’s research, which is published in high-impact journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and the American Journal of Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine focuses on: (1) mechanical ventilation (epidemiology; weaning and liberation; extubation and tracheostomy); (2) acute respiratory distress syndrome (definitions; ventilatory management; trial design); and (3) novel modes of mechanical ventilation, including extra-corporeal life support.

Dr John Granton
is the head of Respirology at University Health Network, Mount Sinai Hospital and Women’s College Hospital.  He is a consultant in respirology and critical care at the Toronto General Hospital and Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. He established and remains the director of the pulmonary hypertension (PH) program at the University Health Network. He is currently President of the Canadian Thoracic Society. Dr Granton’s research interests are in pulmonary hypertension, and critical illness. He has published in several prominent journals including JAMA, NEJM, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and the American Journal of Respiratory and Cell Biology.

Dr. Linda Hoang
is the Associate Director of the BCCDC Public Health Laboratory and Program Head of the BCCDC Public Health Advanced Bacteriology & Mycology Lab in Vancouver. A Medical Microbiologist and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UBC, she is the Medical Co-Lead of BC’s Provincial Infection Control Network, PICNet. Her team at the BCCDC Public Health Laboratory developed the first functioning COVID-19 virus PCR test at the provincial/state level in North America and in the first weeks of the pandemic tested more individuals in BC than all of the US combined. Dr. Hoang’s pre-COVID-19 clinical and research interests include containment-level-3 pathogens and agents of bioterrorism, healthcare-acquired infections, antibiotic-resistant organisms, Cryptococcus gattii, enteric bacterial pathogens, and other outbreaks in BC. A graduate of The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Professional Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H) course, Dr. Hoang has a passion for teaching and serves as the BCCDC Public Health Laboratory site supervisor of UBC’s Medical Microbiology Residency Training Program.
