As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and intensifies across Canada, CAS offers a webinar this Sunday discussing Airway Management in patients with COVID-19. Join Daniel Bainbridge as he moderates a session to hear recommendations of the Canadian airway focus group in consultation with infectious diseases and disaster management specialists.

Professor Tim Cook is Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at Royal United Hospitals NHS Trust, Bath and Honorary Professor of Anaesthesia at the University of Bristol. As the College Advisor on Airway and Director of National Audit Projects he has led two RCoA National Audit Projects (NAP3 on epidurals/spinal anaesthesia and NAP4 on airway management) shining a light on major aspects of anaesthetic practice and changing practice. He also directed NAP5 studying accidental awareness during general anaesthesia and NAP6 on perioperative anaphylaxis. Tim has an overall interest in improving safety and quality in anaesthesia and intensive care using a bottom up approach.

Laura Duggan, MD, FRCPC (Anesthesiology and Pediatrics) is the Assistant Head of the Canadian Airway Focus Group and an Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Airway management, teamwork and communication are her research and teaching passions.  According to Dr. Duggan, when it comes to our Canadian COVID-19 response, PPE and communication are the foundation on which airway management is built. Like Dr Grocott and Dr Bainbridge, Dr Duggan completed her cardiothoracic fellowship at Duke University.

Dr Mastoras is a specialist in Emergency Medicine and Assistant Professor at The Ottawa Hospital with a clinical focus on Resuscitation Medicine. He has a keen interest in the intersection of resuscitation science, human factors, and quality improvement and is engaged clinically and academically in efforts to enhance care during high-stakes medical crises. He is the Program Lead for Faculty CPD Simulation and ED in-situ simulation within the Department of Emergency Medicine, founder and co-chair of the department's Resuscitation Committee, and is a regular instructor in the Trauma and Point-of-care Ultrasound programs. Dr. Mastoras’ academic work focuses on team performance in ED critical care and he has published and lectured nationally on a range of topics in patient safety, simulation, and resuscitation.

Shannon Lockhart, MD, FRCPC

Shannon Lockhart is a consultant anesthesiologist at St. Paul’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital in Vancouver, Canada. Her research interests include airway emergencies, human factors and the culture of mistreatment in medicine. She was involved in the launch of The Airway App, a novel data collection platform for gathering data about CICO emergencies. Shannon is currently involved in simulation programs at both hospitals, for trainees and multi-disciplinary teams, and is greatly interested in its use as a tool for identifying issues around and teaching about human factors, patient safety, and changing culture.

Dr. Grocott currently holds the position of tenured Professor in the Department of Anesthesia, Perioperative & Pain Medicine at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada, where he practices cardiac anesthesia. As Editor-in-Chief for the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia he was instrumental in bringing to publication the first articles in the anesthesia and critical care literature on COVID-19 in the early weeks of the present pandemic. He has also published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and book chapters in a range of anesthesia topics.

Dr. Bainbridge completed both medical school and an anesthesiology residency program at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He subsequently completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic anesthesia at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Following this he started working at London Health Sciences Centre and was appointed the first Director of Perioperative TEE at LHSC. Over the last 10 years, he has held many positions including Coordinator of the Cardiac Fellowship Program, and Coordinator of the City-Wide Fellowship Program. Currently, he is the Director of Cardiac Anesthesia Program and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Research Committee. At the national level, he served as Chair of the Annual Meeting Committee for four years, organizing the specialty scientific national meeting of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society and has served as the Vice President of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society and currently is the president of the Canadian Anesthesiologists Society.
