Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with increased rates of perioperative complications and an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Perioperative management guidelines and recommendations have been developed for patients with OSA, but higher-quality evidence-based guidance is needed. The framework presented in this Continuing Professional Development module is a practical guide to the daily dilemma practitioners face in safely managing patients with OSA undergoing ambulatory anesthesia.
After reading this module, the reader will be able to:
1. State the perioperative adverse events and outcomes associated with obstructive sleep apnea.
2. Identify the patient, procedural, pain, and postanesthesia care unit parameters that may influence postoperative continuous monitoring.
3. Discuss the unique considerations involved in ambulatory anesthesia for patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
4. Describe an evidence-based approach to determine the safety of home discharge for patients with obstructive sleep apnea undergoing ambulatory procedures.
