CAS Resident Ambassador Program
Membership Post-Residency
All anesthesia residents enrolled at Association of Canadian University Departments of Anesthesia (ACUDA) schools are automatically given free CAS membership that’s valid throughout residency. As the national voice for your specialty, CAS is committed to providing you with high-quality professional development, education, networking, and research resources to help you navigate the journey to becoming a fully licenced anesthesiologist. To support this goal, our national office works closely with our Residents’ Section—which is made up of volunteers currently in their residency.

Throughout the year, CAS hosts live educational webinars hosted by prominent Canadian anesthesiologists. These events can introduce you to doctors who work in subspecialties and other areas of practice you’re interested in, while enabling you to ask questions and gain insights from peers in attendance.
Each June, CAS hosts our Annual Meeting, which brings over 800 anesthesia and related healthcare professionals together for a spectacular three-day conference. In addition to a broad range of education events tailored to the needs and feedback of our memebership, the conference offers a full schedule of resident programming, and countless networking opportunities.
It’s a chance for residents to meet anesthesiologists from across the country and get first-hand information about a day-in-the-life at different hospitals, fellowship opportunities, the anesthesia research landscape, and general advice about life after residency.

Throughout the three days of the conference, you’re invited to take part in a full schedule of programming geared towards residents. Please note that the programming below is subject to change each year. Events planned for the coming meeting will be updated on the Annual Meeting webpage in February–March.
Here are some of the biggest events from previous Annual Meetings:
Ace It! A Prep Course for the Royal College Exam
This two-part course debuted in 2025 to prepare residents and international medical graduates (IMG) to go into their written and oral exams with more confidence. During the Written Exam Course, past examiners and recently certified graduates delivered in-depth presentations on subspecialty topics covered in the Royal College assessment. Attendees also worked through a 100+ multiple-choice-question (MCQ) pre-test that simulates the real exam and helped lecturers to tailor each presentation to the classes’ needs. After the course, a short post-test was circulated to boost knowledge retention.
Our Oral Exam Course leveraged an interactive problem-based learning discussion (PBLD) format. Small groups from different programs were grouped with facilitators who’d previously administered or taken the oral exam. Each participant was given time to respond to a mock question and then given feedback by their facilitator.

Resident Simulation (SIM) Olympics
This friendly competition invites residents from across the country to work through fun and immersive simulation challenges as a team for a chance to win a shared cash award. Participants are invited to register as teams of 2–4, or as individuals who will be assigned to a group. Beyond the prize money, it’s a fantastic opportunity to polish your SIM skills, get to know peers from different schools, and add a valuable title to your CV.

Resident’s Panel
Each year, our Residents’ Section develops a unique panel topic to give PGs first-hand career guidance. Panels are made up of practicing anesthesiologists who share experiences from their professional journeys and answer questions from the moderator and the audience. Past panel topics include:

Residents’ Oral Competition
The period to submit an abstract to the upcoming Annual Meeting opens at the end of each year. Accepted abstracts will be eligible for a Best Abstract Award. Residents who’ve submitted the highest-scoring abstracts will be invited to present in the Residents' Oral Competition during the conference. This is an opportunity to jumpstart your research career by increasing visibility of your project(s) and adding a high-profile award to your CV. Positions with our Residents’ Section and CAS Ambassador Program typically open each Fall. These resident-led volunteer roles are a fantastic opportunity to co-develop resources that benefit you, and your peers from coast to coast, and be recognized as an emerging anesthesia community leader. Numerous CAS sections and committees, as well as the Board, also have a Resident Representative who ensures that residents’ interests are incorporated into their activities.

CAS is delighted to launch our new Resident Ambassador Program in 2025. Each ACUDA university offers the position to one anesthesia resident who act as liasons between their classmates and CAS. Each quarter, they share resident-focused networking, education, professional development, and recognition opportunities through student communication channel(s), such as Whatsapp groups or class message boards. They’re also available to answer any questions you may have about who we are and the support we offer residents.

After residency, we hope that you continue your membership with us. Fully certified anesthesiologists receive the same member benefits, which many leverage to get credits for their maintenance of certification, receive drug and equipment bulletins, take part in CAS’ advocacy work to address issues such as HHR shortages, and more. When you graduate and start practicing full time, you will be eligible for the following membership discounts.
