Postoperative high flow nasal cannula versus continuous positive airway pressure for patients with obstructive sleep apnea undergoing cardiovascular surgery: a pilot study‚Äč.

"This pilot study will address the need for alternative modes of oxygenation, by testing the compliance between HFNC versus CPAP. This research will inform the design of large-scale randomized controlled trial to study whether HFNC treatment reduces nocturnal hypoxemia and postoperative adverse events."

"Many thanks to the CAS awards committee for taking the time out to complete the adjudication process during these challenging times. Together with my mentors and the TRANQUiL study team, we are hopeful that this award and the findings of our study will advance collaborative research in the fields of sleep health, anesthesiology and pain medicine. Adaptive Metabolic Changes in Cardiac Myocyte Metabolism Contribute to Enhanced Myocardial Performance in Translational Rodent Models of Acute Anemia.
"The current CAS grant will allow our team to explore the impact of acute anemia on cardiac metabolism, myocardial oxygen homeostasis, and cardiac biomarkers to further assess the mechanism by which acute anemia contributes to adverse outcomes in perioperative patients; with the primary clinical goal of directing therapies, such as treatment of anemia and appropriately targeted blood transfusion, to improve patient outcomes."
Dr Anahi Perlas

Do standard preoperative fasting guidelines ensure an "empty" stomach in diabetic patients?  A cross-sectional comparative study.
"This award will help fund in part a prospective study looking at the gastric content of diabetic patients presenting for elective surgery. This is an important question in Anesthesiology practice as the prevalence of diabetes is increasing in the general population and there is no current consensus as the degree of aspiration risk in patients with diabetes."
