New development in continuous right ventricular monitoring

Saturday Lunch Symposium - 11:45am - 12:45 pm
Room: TBA
Speaker - Dr. André Y. Denault, M.D., Ph.D., FRCPC, ABIM-CCM, FASE, FCCS

Description: Right ventricular (RV) function is a critical yet often under-assessed component of hemodynamic management in cardiac surgery. In this session, Dr. André Denault will explore the evolving role of continuous RV pressure monitoring, emphasizing how it can enhance early recognition of RV dysfunction, RV failure, and RV outflow tract obstruction. Attendees will gain practical insights into interpreting RV pressure waveforms and integrating this data into perioperative decision-making.
The session will also examine how medications and clinical interventions influence RV pressure dynamics, supported by case-based examples. Dr. Denault will conclude by sharing preliminary clinical experience with the Alta monitor, highlighting its potential to advance real-time RV assessment and improve patient outcomes in complex cardiac care settings.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- To discuss the role of right ventricular (RV) pressure monitoring in cardiac surgery
- To understand how to diagnose RV dysfunction, RV failure and RV outflow tract obstruction
- To explore the effect of medications or interventions on RV pressure waveform monitoring
- To share preliminary experience on the Alta monitor
Acute Pain Pathways: Exploring evolving practices in acute pain management in Canada

Sunday Lunch Symposium - 11:30am - 12:30pm
Room: TBA
Speaker - Dr. Ian Gilron
Description - Acute pain affects millions of Canadians annually, yet advancements in its management have been limited over the past two decades. This informative and engaging symposium, led by accomplished anesthesiologist and pain researcher Dr. Ian Gilron, will provide a comprehensive exploration of acute pain management in Canada. Participants will gain valuable insights into the current goals and evidence-based approaches for managing acute pain, the impact it has on patients, and the critical gaps in existing care practices. Dr. Gilron will also explore emerging treatment strategies and cutting-edge research shaping the future of acute pain management.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Analyze the current goals and evidence-based approaches for managing acute pain in Canada.
- Examine the impact of acute pain on patients and identify key unmet needs in current care practices.
- Explore current and emerging treatment strategies and research in the field of acute pain management.
