Welcome to TAX ALERT, a weekly dispatch about the proposed federal tax changes. Should you not wish to receive these emails, please contact us directly at YourVoice@cma.ca to be removed from this subscription list.
The CMA is actively working to influence government on the proposed tax changes. We have retained one of Ottawa's top ranking strategy groups to supplement our internal government relations activities. One of the central pieces of our advocacy is our submission to government on October 2. We are commissioning an in-depth analysis from the Conference Board of Canada on the economic footprint of medical practices, as well as working with tax experts and MD Financial Management. In addition, we are working with organizations and associations who represent small business operators. This will facilitate the exchange of technical information and bring the collective weight of all affected parties to the government's attention.

One of the most influential tools we have at the CMA is our membership. CMA President Dr. Granger Avery issued a message to all members this week, asking you to write, call, and meet with your MP, MPPs, and MLAs. Elected officials need to hear how these changes will affect your practice. You can also send a letter to your MP to make your voice heard.
MPs are in their riding in August, hosting social events and scheduling constituency meetings. We encourage you to connect directly with your MPs to make them aware of the anticipated impact. The CMA has prepared a fact sheet entitled "LET'S TALK FAIRNESS", which can assist you in describing the impact of the proposed changes. Consider sending a Tweet or posting on Facebook about your meeting using the hashtag #TaxFairness.
One of the emerging issue discussions at General Council will focus on the proposed tax changes. Delegates will discuss the CMA's advocacy strategy and provide input on our technical brief to the federal government.
The number of letters, opinion pieces and news articles about the anticipated impact of these changes is growing. On August 1, the Globe and Mail published "Ottawa's new tax measures unfairly target many doctors". You can help expand the reach of supportive news stories by sharing them on your social media channels or by email.
