Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society

Patient Safety Information for Physicians

Message from the CAS Patient Safety Committee Chair

Welcome to the 'Patient Safety' portal of the CAS Web site. It is fitting that this issue be prominent on our 'home' page, as Patient Safety is a key strategic issue for our Society and its members. The CAS continues to work with affiliated anesthesia organizations (Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI), Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) — Canada, American Society of Anesthesiologists, Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland among others) and numerous dedicated volunteers to ensure improved outcomes for our patients.

Patient Safety is a key value at the CAS and the CAS Guidelines to the Practice of Anesthesia developed by the Society over the last 2 decades has ensured a continued improvement in quality of care. Our recent Past-President, Dr John Scovil, had the vision in 2003 to recognize that the Society and the profession needed to build on its strengths and leadership in safety by forming the CAS Patient Safety Committee (PSC).

The PSC is committed to promote and advocate a comprehensive patient safety program that serves our patients and CAS members, to establish initiatives that address specific areas, such as safe medication practices, simulation, anesthesia safety database, workplace human factors, education and research, and standards, and to advise the CAS Board of Directors regarding patient safety matters.

We have presented Patient Safety Symposia at the CAS Annual Meeting focussing on such issues as fatigue, simulation and patient safety and information technology. We continue to invite internationally recognized speakers to address the issues surrounding patient safety. The audio of these patient safety symposia (2007, 2008, 2009) are available in this section and on the CPSI website. There is also a link for safety alerts for the membership to view the most recent safety alerts regarding medications or other issues.

The committee will work closely with the CAS Board of Directors and other committees to ensure that the Society continues to enhance the quality and safety of care to our patients.

As part of this endeavour this Web portal offers us the opportunity to bring key patient safety alerts on patient safety issues to you in a timely manner. We plan to use this site as a communication tool to update you on changing recommendations to standards of practice — in liaison with the CAS Standards Committee — upcoming symposia for the CAS Annual Meeting, or important patient safety meetings or alerts.
