Dr Earl Wynands Professor Emeritus in the Department of Anaesthesia at the University of Ottawa, former Chair of Anaesthesia at the University of Ottawa, and former Chief of Anaesthesia at the Civic Hospital and at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, he has made important advances in cardiac anaesthesia since his seminal publication, "Coronary artery disease and anaesthesia".

Having initiated the first professional assistance program in the country for physicians with disabilities, he also established the University of Ottawa Patient Care Simulation Centre. The Centre provides an important teaching tool for medical educators by allowing medical emergencies to be enacted without putting patients at risk. His example, despite a visual impairment, has been inspiring and encouraging for students, interns, colleagues and other medical specialists alike. He received the Order of Canada in 1998.
